Bingo patrons daub suspect in holdup try
A man who wanted to rob the night’s take at a Livonia bingo hall got more than he bargained for as three bingo patrons chased him down and held him for the police early Sunday morning.
Elton Mason, 20, of Detroit was arraigned Monday in 16th District Court by Magistrate Dennis Epler on seven counts including armed robbery, felony firearm, felonious assault and being an habitual offender.
He is currently being held in the Wayne County Jail on a $250,000 cash/surety bond. There is a 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, preliminary exam set for the case.
According to Livonia police reports, a Wyandotte woman who works at Shamrock Bingo, 33111 Plymouth, was leaving with a deposit bag at 1:45 a.m. Sunday when a man started yelling and running at her.
She managed to get into her car when the man caught up with her, trying to force the car door open and pounding on the window with a gun. The report said the man broke one of the car’s windows in the effort.
At the same time, a group of three bingo patrons came out of the hall and started chasing the man off the premises.
By the time Livonia police officers arrived on the scene, the patrons had apprehended the man and pinned him to the ground at the nearby Sheldon Pool - less than 100 yards southeast from the bingo hall.
During the citizens’ arrest, it was learned that the culprit had tried to fight off the three men and threatened one of them with the gun during the altercation.

Mecca’s hit with Rank profits
The knock on effect of the new gambling laws combined with the new smoking laws has seen attendance in bingo halls fall dramatically. The last time the industry suffered a slump like this was when the National Lottery was introduced 13 years ago. However the industry recovered from that over time and they will probably bounce back again, although it is taking its toll on their profits.
Rank Group which owns Mecca Bingo, announced that profits have fallen by 19% since September 1st following the introduction of laws limiting the number of Section 21 high value jackpot machines. Each club used to have 13 of these machines, but this has been reduced to just 4. The machines accounted for over £70 million of revenue for Rank Group. Weekly visits to Rank clubs have fallen 15% to just 300,000. Rank Group also own Grosvenor Casinos. Their top share price has dipped - by a whopping third.
Rank is trying to move ahead and keep bingo modern. They have introduced handheld electronic terminals and have an online presence. New legislation ahs brought with it benefits as well as problems. The new legislation has allowed for roll over jackpots and so they have given away 3 £1 million prizes since September.
The bingo industry has been hit very hard, while bookies have benefited from longer opening hours and the introduction of blackjack and video poker machines.
Bingo firms also have to contend with paying both VAT at 17.5% AND 15% Gross Profits tax whilst bookies only have to pay gross profits tax.
